The world currently has the largest number of crisis migrants than in any other period of human history. People have been forced to flee their homes for diverse and complex reasons stemming from political upheaval, climate change, and war. Imagine 103 million people searching for a place to join a community, raise their children in safety, and live in peace. Here in Canada, we may consider that we are fortunate to already live in such a place. For those of us from settler families, perhaps born and raised in Canada and know no other home, we may ask ourselves on whose homeland have we built our communities? The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has called upon Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Canada to participate in forging a new framework for living together. My sculpture is in remembrance of every person, standing tall despite physical or psychological burdens, who advances step by step towards an equitable and inclusive society. Together Canadians from all walks of life can build community based on mutual respect and shared responsibilities in a place for all to call home.
