Molecular Rewrite

Contemporary figurative ceramic sculpture by Ellen Scobie

Molecular Rewrite, 2024
Ceramic with underglaze, slip and acrylic paint
29”H x 10”W x 9”D

Standing on firm legs, this ceramic figure rises into a body marked by curvature and collapse. Its posture is resigned yet resolute, capturing a transitional state between fragility and resilience. Inspired by the Japanese mishima technique, I impressed fragments of the chemical formula for Teriparatide—a medication for osteoporosis—into the clay around the base and lumbar spine, making visible the body’s internal process of repair and adaptation. This work is reflective of my own diagnosis and treatment, while visualizing the embodiment of pharmacological interventions.
