What are Original Digital Prints?

There is a lot of discussion these days about the nature of authenticity in relation to art produced digitally. Is it original and how should it be compared to other non-digitally created art? Many concerns arise from a lack of knowledge of the role of the technology used.

In my work, I use the computer to manipulate colour pixels into a composition. Some of the compositional elements are sourced from photographs I have taken, others from ephemera I have scanned, still others are created in the software program. The creative process is not unlike that of a painter or print-maker who chooses colours, creates shapes, and overlays them to produce the desired effect. I then print the final composition onto photographic paper or print-making paper using a variety of print methods. The technological process is most akin to print-making. The result is imbued with the aesthetic of the artist, and has been created by his or her own hand -- whether that hand held a brush, ink roller or mouse.

What I am creating are called original prints. A reproduction print is a copy of an artwork which already exists - typically a painting or drawing - but, the artwork could exist in any other form.

I found an interesting article by Jerry Point in Plein Art Magazine (now Fine Art Connoisseur), entitled, Redefining "Original": Adapting to New Technologies in Art (Dec 05). He speaks at length about a number of issues concerning the term "original", comparing digital art to non-digital art, and classification of works produced digitally. Sacks of Yesterdays

Vote in the Saatchi Showdown!

Voting has now closed.

The Saatchi Online Gallery was started as a temporary exhibition venue as the gallery closed for a move to new premises in London. Since then, the online gallery has generated a life of its own far exceeding the original intention. Thousands of artists from around the world have uploaded their images to the gallery and the Saatchi people have added innovative features to encourage dialog between artists and the public. It now ranks as one of the world's most visited web-sites.

Have some fun exploring the many artworks showcased in the Saatchi online gallery and stop by to vote for my piece, Sacks of Yesterdays, in the next Artist Showdown. Voting starts on June 30, 2008 at 9am GMT.
